Suriname

Suriname is our newest project location, but it is a hard place to work because it is still legal to take parrots and other birds from the wild and there are so few ways for local people to support themselves. Recently, people in the village of Kalebaskreek agreed to stop trapping and develop a parrot conservation program. They have received training on parrot monitoring and conservation and now monitor and protect a large river system. The people here are working with One Earth Conservation to protect the red-and-green macaw, scarlet macaw, yellow-crowned amazon, and blue-and-yellow macaw.
