One Earth Conservation (OEC) is a founding member of the International Alliance for the Protection of Parrots (IAPP) and helped to organize the IAPP’s second bilingual (English and Spanish) Parrot Crisis Summit, which was presented online on September 19, 2025 with a focus on various ways to take action to help parrots, and people, globally. Over 100 people attended this online event that featured speakers and facilitators from the conservation, education, advocacy, and rescue/sanctuary sectors.
Â
For example, Betsy Messenger of the Institute for Humane Education and Sylvia Margarita de la Parra MartÃnez of One Earth Conservation led a discussion on Education and Awareness: Inspiring Your Community and the Next Generation that included participants from Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, Northeast Avian Rescue, and Escuela Secundaria Licenciado Adolfo López Mateos.

There were opportunities for attendees to gather in small breakout rooms to discuss many of the issues featured during the Summit and the conversations were lively and informative. New connections were made and old ones renewed!
Â
In the afternoon the focus shifted to assisting existing organizations with capacity building, with one session for rescue/sanctuary groups and another for conservation organizations. A third session was offered for people seeking careers in any of the sectors working to help wild and captive parrots, such as veterinary medicine, law, advocacy, and others.
Â
Rev. Dr. LoraKim Joyner of One Earth Conservation was the opening keynote speaker and she spoke in general about the Parrot Crisis and summarized the issues presented at the 2024 Summit. This year’s Summit also included a closing keynote address, which was both sobering and inspiring, presented by Dr. Pat Latas on Acting to End the Parrot Crisis: Realities and Reasons.
