Parrot Counts in Beauty

This photo collection depicts the extensive parrot monitoring effort occurring during the first half of the island-wide parrot count on Ometepe Island Nicaragua. It is taking place from July 13- August 14, 2026. The words are adapted from The Beauty Way - Navajo (Dine) (photos and videos by members of the counting team and the two participating NGOs - Biometepe and One Earth Conservation)

We count in beauty.

Among the twin volcanoes and rainbows, we count in beauty.

Motorcycling in the dark, among wind swept country roads, farms, and descending rain clouds, we count in beauty.

Among companions we toil in the dark, summarizing data and honoring every single parrot we have seen: Yellow-naped Amazon parrots, Orange-fronted parakeets, Orange-chinned parakeets, Pacific parakeets, Brown-hooded parrots, Red-lored parrots. They fly in beauty.

With beauty over me, under me, behind me, before me, we count in beauty.

The island-wide count will end in beauty – but not until August 14^th 2026.

Half-way through the count, our raw data reveals over 2,500 Yellow-naped Amazon parrots.
