Solidifying Solidarity

It’s been about a month since I blogged about our Unconditional Solidarity Campaign in Honduras and what a month it’s been! To date, our very committed team has identified and protected 114 active scarlet macaw nests in La Moskitia, although, unfortunately, 21 nests have been poached. On the brighter side, that number has held steady since April 13 (that is, no new nests have been poached).

Although, due to our limited capacity, we have focused soley on the scarlet macaw, recently LoraKim has noted that poaching of endangered yellow-naped amazon and other parrot nests has continued in La Moskitia. Overall, however, the number of wild parrots in this region of Honduras has been increasing over recent years.

The Unconditional Solidarity Campaign is reaching people globally and, most importantly, throughout Honduras. During the past few weeks, the campaign has been visited by a journalist, a local veterinarian, Honduran college students, and local police (who have joined the patrols). Just today, the team has been joined by about 15 more visitors from three Honduran organization – ICF (the country’s forestry service), Green Island Challenge of Guanaja Island, and the Pastoral de Tierra y Medioambiente of Parroquia San José, Catholic Church. The camp is getting happily crowded!
